Best Used Cars Under RM30,000 in Malaysia (2026)
· Roda Editorial · Updated
RM30,000 buys a lot of car choice in Malaysia's used market, but it also means older cars, higher mileage and more variation in condition. The best car for this budget is usually not a particular badge, but a common model with cheap parts, a simple drivetrain and a clear service history. This guide explains how to choose, which models to shortlist, and what to budget for after you buy.
Prices change with the market. Use the price filter on Roda to see what is listed under RM30,000 today.
What makes a good car in this budget
Look for:
- Wide parts availability and many workshops. National brands and long-running Japanese models are serviced almost everywhere.
- A simple drivetrain. A naturally aspirated engine with a conventional automatic or manual is usually cheaper to keep running than a small turbo with a dual-clutch gearbox, once the warranty has ended.
- Low running costs. Road tax, insurance, fuel and tyres all add up every year.
- A clear history. Service records, a known number of owners, and no flood or major accident.
Models to shortlist
These models are worth checking in this budget. Which years fit depends on mileage, condition and the market, so check the asking prices on Roda. Judge each car on its own condition.
Hatchbacks
- Perodua Myvi (older generations): see our Perodua Myvi buying guide for the generations and their gearboxes.
- Perodua Axia: the smallest Perodua, for city driving and short commutes.
- Proton Iriz: a hatchback from Proton's range.
Sedans
- Perodua Bezza and Proton Saga: both national sedans with small engines. Compare them in Proton Saga vs Perodua Bezza.
- Proton Persona: Proton's sedan alongside the Saga.
- Toyota Vios and Honda City (older generations): see Toyota Vios vs Honda City.
- Nissan Almera (N17): the earlier Almera with a 1.5-litre engine and a four-speed automatic. See the Nissan Almera review.
Road tax by engine size
Road tax for petrol saloons and hatchbacks owned by individuals in Peninsular Malaysia, from JPJ's rate guide:
- Up to 1,000 cc: RM20 a year.
- 1,001 to 1,200 cc: RM55 a year.
- 1,201 to 1,400 cc: RM70 a year.
- 1,401 to 1,600 cc: RM90 a year.
Above 1,600 cc, road tax rises with every cc. Rates differ in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan, and for company-owned cars. Car ads on Roda show a road tax estimate for each car based on the same guide. See road tax renewal online.
Budget beyond the price
Set aside money for the first months of ownership:
- Inspection and transfer fees, paid once.
- Insurance and road tax, if they are due soon.
- Wear items: tyres, battery, brake pads, wipers and a full service with oil and filters.
- A repair reserve for anything the inspection finds.
An older car at the top of your budget leaves nothing for these. Consider looking slightly below your maximum.
What to check on an older car
- Paperwork: the name on the registration record matches the seller's IC, and the chassis and engine numbers match.
- Loan: any loan will be settled at transfer.
- Rust: sills, floor, boot floor and suspension mounts.
- Gearbox: smooth changes when warm, no slipping.
- Air-conditioning: stays cold after fifteen minutes in traffic.
- Suspension: no knocks over bumps, no pulling to one side.
- Tyres: tread depth and date codes.
- Flood signs: silt or water marks under the carpets and in the boot.
- Mileage: check that the odometer reading fits the age, the service records and the wear on the pedals and steering wheel.
Book an inspection before you pay the balance. See our PUSPAKOM inspection guide.
Loans on older cars
Banks look at a car's age and value when they decide how much to lend, so financing can be harder or more expensive for older cars. Get a loan quote before you commit. See the car loan guide.
